Beautiful beaches, slow mornings and a change of scene — all within a short flight of Nairobi.

You know that moment when you realise you need a holiday, but the thought of organising one feels like another job?

You want a beautiful place to stay. A breakfast you can take your time over. A few days when somebody else can handle the arrangements.

Then you start thinking about long flights, leave days and whether everyone will ever agree on a destination.

This is where Zanzibar deserves your attention.

A direct flight from Nairobi can take around an hour and a half, depending on the service. Allow for airport formalities and your hotel transfer, of course, but the flight itself is short enough to make a few nights away worth considering.

And once you arrive, there is plenty to make those few nights feel special.

Close to home, with a holiday of its own

Picture arriving at your hotel, putting your bags down and changing into something that belongs on a beach.

There is no meeting to get to. You can decide whether the afternoon calls for a swim, lunch with a sea view or absolutely nothing.

Zanzibar can offer those slow beach days alongside a different kind of exploring: Stone Town’s historic streets, a visit to a spice farm, or an evening on the water. You can choose how much of each belongs in your holiday.

That is what makes it appealing for a short international break. You have enough choice to build a trip around the people coming with you.

No passport yet? Start by asking about a temporary travel permit

If you are Kenyan and have been putting off travelling because you do not have a passport, it is worth checking the temporary-permit option.

Kenya’s Directorate of Immigration issues a temporary travel permit for travel within East Africa, valid for one year. Tanzania’s entry guidance allows a passport or another recognised travel document, subject to its requirements. For a Zanzibar trip, confirm acceptance of your specific permit with your airline and Tanzanian immigration before making non-refundable bookings.

A national ID alone should not be treated as enough for this journey. The passport alternative needs to be arranged and checked properly.

When you enquire, tell me early if you do not have a passport so we can establish the document requirements before choosing your flights.

For families: a holiday everyone gets to enjoy

A family trip can easily become a very expensive change of location for the person who still has to organise every meal and activity.

I would start a Zanzibar family holiday with the hotel: comfortable rooms, a pool, suitable meals and a beach setting that works for your children.

Then I would add a little exploring around their ages and interests. Perhaps a spice-farm visit, a guided outing in Stone Town, or a suitable boat excursion with time left for swimming and rest.

There should also be an afternoon when nobody needs to be ready at a particular time.

A short flight is especially appealing here. It gives families a way to consider an international holiday without committing to a long journey.

My suggested stay: four or five nights, with one beach hotel as your base.

For friends and groups: give the group chat a destination

There is probably already a holiday sitting somewhere in your WhatsApp messages.

A birthday. A girls’ getaway. A reunion that has been discussed for so long it now needs its own anniversary.

Zanzibar gives that conversation somewhere practical to go.

I would build the trip around a few shared moments: a welcome dinner, an outing on the water and an evening worth getting dressed for. Then I would leave room for different interests.

Some people will want a spa appointment. Others will want to explore. Somebody will be perfectly happy beside the pool.

Agree on the overall budget, room sharing and the experiences that matter most before booking. Those conversations help everyone arrive knowing what to expect.

My suggested stay: four nights, with two main shared experiences and plenty of free time.

For solo travellers: you can make the plan yourself

Sometimes the dates work, the money is there and the only missing piece is somebody to go with.

You can still take the trip.

For a solo Zanzibar break, I would put care into the hotel’s location and atmosphere, arrange airport transfers in advance and choose a few guided experiences you would enjoy.

Your days might include a slow breakfast, a walk, a treatment at the spa and a good book by the pool. You could join an excursion when you feel like company.

If you would enjoy travelling with others, a personally hosted group trip is another way to go without needing to bring a friend.

My suggested stay: three or four nights for a short escape, with more time if you want to explore at a slower pace.

Choose the beach as carefully as the hotel

A beautiful photograph tells you very little about what an ordinary afternoon at a property will feel like.

Check the actual beach access, swimming conditions, dining options and distance from the experiences you want to include.

Tides deserve attention in Zanzibar. The northwest coast is generally less affected, which makes the Kendwa area worth considering if spending time in the sea is a priority. Conditions still need checking at the individual property.

For families, room layouts and meal arrangements may matter most. For a celebration, you might care more about atmosphere and dinner options. For a solo break, you may want a comfortable setting with easy access to activities.

The right hotel should make your version of the holiday easier to enjoy.

A few details to sort before you go

Kenyan citizens do not need a tourist visa for Tanzania, including Zanzibar, but still need acceptable travel documents. Children’s documentation should be checked individually.

For travel from Kenya, check yellow-fever certificate requirements and any applicable exemptions in good time.

Zanzibar also requires designated inbound travel insurance. Zanzibar Insurance Corporation currently lists a reduced premium of US$22 for travellers from EAC member states; confirm the applicable fee when arranging your trip.

Put the full holiday cost together too: flights, baggage, transfers, accommodation, meals, activities, insurance and any hotel taxes payable separately.

Once those details are handled, you can look forward to the part you actually wanted: being there.

Your next holiday could be closer than you think

Perhaps it is the first international trip with your children. Perhaps it is finally taking that holiday with your friends. Perhaps you simply want a few days away on your own.

Zanzibar is worth making room for.
