Malaysia Beyond Kuala Lumpur: Five Holiday Combinations Worth Considering

You could spend a few days in Kuala Lumpur, see the towers, shop, eat well and fly home happy. But when you are travelling from Nairobi, adding a second stop can turn the trip into quite a different holiday.

Perhaps you want a city break followed by a beautiful beach hotel. Perhaps you choose destinations by what you can eat there. Or perhaps you want two countries, a birthday dinner and enough free time to enjoy getting dressed for it.

Kuala Lumpur gives you a starting point for all of those possibilities. Penang, Melaka and Langkawi keep the journey within Malaysia; Bali and Singapore take you into a second country.

Here are five combinations I would consider, depending on the holiday you have in mind.

First, give Kuala Lumpur a few days of its own

I would start with around three nights in Kuala Lumpur, adjusting that around your arrival time.

KLCC and Bukit Bintang are worth considering as hotel areas if shopping and dining feature in your plans. Spend time around the Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC Park, browse the shops, and leave an evening for Jalan Alor, known for its restaurants and hawker food.

For me, a comfortable hotel and a sensible location would come before adding more excursions. You want to be able to enjoy dinner, get back easily and wake up ready for the next day.

Then comes the fun part: choosing what follows.

Kuala Lumpur and Bali: shopping, celebration and time by the pool

This is the combination I would put forward for a birthday holiday or a girls’ trip with a mix of city life and downtime.

Start in Kuala Lumpur, then fly to Bali. In Bali, your choice of area shapes the second half of the holiday: Seminyak brings together coastal accommodation, dining and boutiques, while Ubud offers a setting centred on culture, rice-field scenery and spas.

With five nights in Bali, I would choose one base or split between two only if the group really wants both experiences. Every hotel change takes some time out of the holiday. For more on Bali, read my guide Bali With the Girls.

Leave space for a beach-club afternoon, a cultural outing and a dinner you look forward to. If you are celebrating, tell your planner early so the occasion can be built into the arrangements.

My suggested split: three nights in Kuala Lumpur and five in Bali.

Kuala Lumpur and Singapore: two cities, with plenty to eat and explore

Choose this pairing if your idea of a good holiday includes neighbourhood exploring, memorable meals, shopping and evenings out.

In Singapore, you could build your stay around Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay and Chinatown, with time for hawker food as well as a restaurant reservation. The appeal is the mix: a landmark visit one afternoon, a neighbourhood and its food the next.

I would give Singapore three nights rather than trying to squeeze the whole visit into a stopover.

Plan the hotel location around the things you want to do, and compare the full cost of both city stays before settling on your dates. There is room for a special dinner without making every meal a major event.

My suggested split: three nights in Kuala Lumpur and three in Singapore.

Kuala Lumpur and Penang: for the friend who plans lunch during breakfast

Penang would be high on my list for travellers who enjoy food, cafés and places with a story.

Use George Town as your base if you want heritage streets, shophouses, museums and the murals around Armenian Street close to your daily plans. You can spend a morning exploring, pause for coffee and give yourself time to follow up on a food recommendation.

Char koay teow, assam laksa and cendol are among Penang’s local favourites. A food-focused outing can help you explore that variety, especially if you want some guidance on where to begin.

I would leave gaps between meals and sightseeing. Half the pleasure of a trip like this is being able to stop when something catches your attention.

My suggested split: three nights in Kuala Lumpur and three in Penang.

Kuala Lumpur and Melaka: a shorter escape with heritage and riverside evenings

Melaka, also commonly called Malacca, is a good option to consider when you want another setting within Malaysia and prefer a road transfer to another flight.

Build your visit around the historic centre, Dutch Square, Jonker Street and a cruise along the Melaka River. Jonker Street’s night market is usually held from Friday to Sunday, so a weekend stay is worth considering if that is part of the appeal.

You could visit on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur. I would lean towards two nights if you want time to settle into a hotel, explore without watching the clock and enjoy the evening atmosphere.

Choose your accommodation carefully: being close to the heritage centre and having the room comfort you want are both worth checking.

My suggested split: three nights in Kuala Lumpur and two in Melaka.

Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi: finish with a beach stay

If the holiday you need involves a pool, a book and very few decisions, Langkawi deserves a look.

After Kuala Lumpur, take a domestic flight to Langkawi and settle into a beach property. Pantai Cenang is one of the island’s well-known beach areas, while Tanjung Rhu offers a more secluded bay setting.

Here, I would spend more time choosing the hotel. Look at the actual beach access, the pool, room layout and dining options — particularly if you hope to spend much of the stay at the property.

You could add a boat outing or a spa appointment, but leave yourself days to enjoy the hotel you have chosen. Consider the season when setting your dates, especially if beach time is the main reason for going.

My suggested split: three nights in Kuala Lumpur and four in Langkawi.

Which combination fits your holiday?

Bali — birthdays, girls’ trips, culture and coastal downtime. Suggested total stay: 8 nights. Singapore — city exploring, food, shopping and evenings out. Suggested total stay: 6 nights. Penang — food, cafés, street art and heritage. Suggested total stay: 6 nights. Melaka / Malacca — a shorter trip with history and riverside evenings. Suggested total stay: 5 nights. Langkawi — a city break followed by a beach hotel. Suggested total stay: 7 nights.

These are suggested stays at the destinations. Allow additional time for your international journey and adjust the split around your flights.

Planning your Malaysia holiday from Nairobi

Look at the whole journey before booking: international flights, the transfer to your second destination, baggage, airport transfers and the trip home. For the Bali and Singapore combinations, check the entry requirements for both countries.

Your travel dates, room preference and preferred pace will help determine which pairing works best. A beautiful itinerary should also feel comfortable to pay for and enjoyable to follow.

Tell me your approximate dates, who is travelling, the combination that appeals to you and your budget including flights, and I will help you plan it. Prefer to travel with a group I personally host? Explore the upcoming hosted trips.
